This is typical of most cultures in Asia. You must complete your graduation, go for a post-graduation, and get a job in the same exact field. The education is expected to be sufficient to ensure a lifelong career in the chosen field.

The thought process is understandable as a single career path is simpler when the motive is to begin work ASAP. Several people have done exceedingly well by doing exactly this. 

But some of you couldn’t or weren’t able to get a job and have doubted themselves and their life choices. That brings us to point#2.

๐Ÿ”ด ๐Ÿ”ด ๐™๐ž๐ซ๐จ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ž๐๐ ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž ๐จ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐š๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐š ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž

This primarily stems from point#1, where the you are not exposed to options and are conditioned to follow the known path. There are so many certifications and cross-functional courses that can serve as great options to the traditional path. However, neither are the teachers aware of them, nor are the industry people willing to share this knowledge.

These options are in fact immensely useful for those of you who couldn’t follow a traditional path for some reason.

But, there’s a bump, which is point#3.

Whether you are on the traditional path or not, there comes a point when you have to let go of some or all parts of your education. You may do it by choice or by force.

Do you know who says this? Those people who are hellbent on point#1.

This thought process stops you from progressing in your field wholeheartedly even if you know it is perfect for you.

Choose what’s good for you!

So, if you have ever felt hampered by any of these points, this is your sign to take the decision that is right for you. If you feel you wish to do more or change things, go for it. We have only so many years to be healthy enough to work full-time in a job of our liking!

3 LinkedIn tips for incoming graduate students (and a bonus tip)

Every year, several thousand students go on to study postgraduate courses.

Here are 3 tips to take your postgraduate journey from a great start to a stellar end!

TIP # 1

Build your online presence.

In today’s times of social media, the first thing everyone does is Google a person’s name. Hence, you must build a positive online presence that demonstrates your expertise in your field. People who type your name must find your professional social media accounts first.

So, if you already have a LinkedIn account, awesome! If you don’t, now is the time to make one. LinkedIn must be used to not only connect with your peers but also showcase your knowledge. Go to the next tips to know more about this.

If you are into research, you can also make a Google Scholar account and a ResearchGate account. Ensure that you definitely make an ORCID account.

TIP # 2

Post on LinkedIn regularly.

The most common mistake that all the students do is to become active on LinkedIn only when they are about to finish their course and are looking for a job.

This is too late in the day!

You have to become active from day one.

Post regularly on your profile. It can be small writeups on fundamentals, an interesting news or research article, or a great photo showcasing a concept.

Remember to use proper hashtags, but not too many.

AND FOR THE SAKE OF EVERYTHING HOLY, DO NOT USE AI! It takes the fun out of writing what you feel and you end up spewing content that is soulless, verbose, and irrelevant.

TIP #3

Explore career paths.

LinkedIn is not only for connecting with peers. It is also a tool to explore the various career paths of the experienced people in your field.

Check out the profiles of the middle and senior management. Go through their education and certifications.

Research and see if you find anything that you would want to pursue. Join groups to expand your network.

Learn a language – native, foreign, or programming

Learning a language has multiple advantages. Programming languages introduce you to the world of technological advancements and software in your field.

Learning a native language expands your horizons in different parts of your country.

Learning a foreign language puts you on a global scale.

Ensure that you reach at least B1 or B2 level to be able to converse and understand the natives.

However, today, you can narrow down the exact career path you wish to take. So, start early and make the most of LinkedIn to soar the heights of a stalwart career!

Whether we are starting as a student of corrosion, or are entering the field after working as a non-corrosion person, there is always some career pathway that we are not aware of.


There are research projects, certifications, audits, inspections, etc.

Abbreviation day – EN 50125-1 Standard for Railways

 EN 50125-1 Standard for Railways

๐Ÿ”ด With so many short forms used in our work all around, it gets confusing and it is also not possible to remember/know all of them. So here’s something new.


๐Ÿ”ด I will take up one short form/standard name and describe in a couple of lines what it is. Some of you may be familiar with some of the common ones.

Today it is ๐Ÿ“Œ EN 50125-1 ๐Ÿ“Œ


๐Ÿ”ด EN stands for European standards.

๐Ÿ”ด EN 50125-1 is the standard used in railways to determine if the equipment (material, design) is compatible with the environmental conditions in Europe.

๐Ÿ”ดSimply put, if you are in charge of design and manufacturing of a railway part, you have to look at this standard to see the environmental condition in the area of operation of the train.

๐Ÿ”ด The selection of the material, design, surface treatments, have to be then decided depending on how severe the environment is (sunny/cold/wind/snow etc.)

To being a corrosion ‘nerd’

I am someone who loves to study. This may sound ‘nerdy’. In fact, someone called me that once. I was almost 22 and even then I was OFFENDED. Hah!
This is something so many of us have struggled with. In fact, just to not be a ‘nerd’, there are people who have simply stopped studying as much as they used to. After all ‘OMG, you study so much!’ is not really ‘cool’ after a certain age.
Not anymore! I have learned that everyone is ‘nerdy’ in their own way, even those who pride themselves of being ‘laid back’ and proceed to call others ‘nerds’. 
So, here’s to you, the sports lover. YES, I am looking at you. If you can mouth off the statistics for your favourite team, you are a nerd, only a sports one.
In fact when I get hold of a magazine for corrosion, I have to take a deep breath and choose which article to read. Obviously, I want to read all the articles at once! There is so much to learn, especially in terms of science.
Well, guess what! This pandemic has turned each of us into nerds! Everyone is up and about completing certifications in a variety of topics. I have not been exposed to half of them.
I have wanted to signup for so many online courses, but two things always held me back –
1. Money 
Some of the exemplary courses are expensive. As a fellow course creator, I can totally understand this. However, as a student, I am unable to make myself go for it.
2. Time
As a WFH person, it is difficult to get sufficient time to concentrate AND complete the course in time.
Hence, when I designed the courses for my website CORROSPECTIVE , I decided to make them short and detailed.
Thus, there are three categories – Major, Mini, and Micro. The name itself defines the scope of the course.

Resources for a corrosion beginner

Corrosion is a complex subject. It is difficult to pick and choose the starting point. It is very easy to spiral into a confused state of mind if the right resources are not available.

Hence, I write this blog post to list out a few books which are great if you are a corrosion enthusiast.

        I love this book and I always refer to it for my work.

Corrosion – the bane of all the industries

Corrosion is the journey of an element from its most active form to its most stable form. 

The birth

At the place of its birth, inside the earth, an element such as iron comes into contact with atmospheric oxygen, chlorides, sulphate, and moisture. and is quite happy to remain in peace with them in the form of Fe2O3, Fe3O4, FeCl3 and such.

The growth

It is then extracted and made to go through a number of processes which separate it from the ions and bring it to its elemental form. It is then put into use to make steel, where it coexists with carbon, manganese, chromium, and other alloying elements.

The interaction

However, iron has three electrons that it desperately need to give away. That is exactly what it does the moment the steel is brought out from the factory and put outside in the shed. Iron is more than happy to reunite with its old buddies – oxygen and moisture. It gladly gives away its electrons to them and returns to its peaceful state of Fe2Oand Fe3O4.

And that is how the corrosion of steel begins.
